Student Attendance Policy
The NYC Department of Education requires young people between ages 6 and 17.5 to attend school on a full-time basis. Students with less than 90% attendance are considered Chronically Absent and are more likely to have lower scores on Regents exams and other tests, and at higher risk of not graduating from high school.
Absence Notes
Guardians must submit a note explaining why a student was absent from school.
You should provide a note from a doctor or health-care professional if a student's illness is causing long-term or frequent absences. If a student has been absent from school for another reason, provide the school with documentation explaining why, such as a medical appointment or court order.
Guardian Notification of Absence
The school calls the parent on the first day that a child is absent from school. Subsequent calls will be made home until the student has returned to school.
Guardian-Counselor Meetings
After a student has been absent two consecutive days without notification or appropriate documentation from the guardian, the school counselor/social worker will reach out to the parent for an attendance meeting.
Home Visit
When a student has been absent for 10 consecutive school days or a cumulative of 15 days without proper documentation, a home visit will be made to address the welfare of the student and to discuss the educational impact.
ACS Referral
When a student has been excessively absent from school and appropriate documentation and/or communication with the student’s counselor/social worker has not occurred, the school will make an ACS referral to ensure the well-being of the student.
Attendance Requirement Exceptions
The following groups qualify as exceptions to the age requirements for attendance:
- Minors who have graduated from high school
- Students who have earned a general equivalency diploma (GED)
Lateness & Class Cutting
Should a student arrive late to or cut a class, guardians will receive a text message/notification from that class period teacher.

El Departamento de Educación de la Ciudad de Nueva York exige que los jóvenes de entre 6 y 17.5 años asistan a la escuela a tiempo completo. Notificación de ausencia del tutor
La escuela llama a los padres el primer día que el niño falta a la escuela. Las llamadas posteriores se harán a casa hasta que el estudiante haya regresado a la escuela.
Reuniones de tutores y consejeros
Después de que un estudiante haya estado ausente dos días consecutivos sin notificación o documentación apropiada del tutor, el consejero escolar/trabajador social se comunicará con los padres para una reunión de asistencia.
Visita a casa
Cuando un estudiante ha estado ausente durante 10 días escolares consecutivos o un acumulado de 15 días sin la documentación adecuada, se realizará una visita al hogar para abordar el bienestar del estudiante y discutir el impacto educativo.
Referencia de ACS
Cuando un estudiante ha estado excesivamente ausente de la escuela y no se ha producido la documentación adecuada y/o la comunicación con el consejero/trabajador social del estudiante, la escuela hará una remisión a ACS para garantizar el bienestar del estudiante.
Excepciones a los requisitos de asistencia
Los siguientes grupos califican como excepciones a los requisitos de edad para asistir: Menores de edad que han terminado la escuela secundaria
Estudiantes que han obtenido un diploma de equivalencia general (GED) Llegar tarde y faltar a la clase
Si un estudiante llega tarde o falta a una clase, los tutores recibirán un mensaje de texto/notificación del maestro de ese período de clase.
