Project Discovery

Project Discovery is an adapted Outward Bound program that provides students with the opportunity to do things they've never done before and go to new places, all while learning about themselves.  It is an experiential learning program based on the philosophy that learning can be done in and outside of school.  The group meets once a week after school in order to build a communal spirit, and to prepare for or debrief the trips.  There are usually 10-15 students in the program. Students go on 6 overnight trips spread out across the school year comprising of 3 backpacking/camping trips (fall, winter, and spring), 2 urban/cultural explorations, and a climbing trip. Students who complete the program receive a gym credit along with an academic elective credit. Project Discovery originated at South Bronx High School in 1979, and I've been teaching it since 1981.
